This year's walk no exception.  In addition to hosting 1,178 event participants, we informed more than 47,000 people online through Facebook and Twitter about the need for better sarcoma treatments and community support. We saw 70 teams representing Dragonslayers, including 50 who were fundraising for the Foundation.  Thank you to everyone who contributed on behalf of a loved one lost to, or fighting sarcoma.

For those who were unable to join us, here is a recap of the day's events:

We started the morning by greeting participants and handing them a postcard directing them to various tents to pick up shirts, purchase merchandise, participate in the raffle, visit the memorial tent, get a massage, enjoy some free food & drinks, and more, and look for the reporters for group photos.  Hundreds gathered around to the tunes of DJ Ethan Anderson.

At 9:30, we started the program, kicked off by our Emcee, Chris Eastwood.  The program featured Jason Sears, Executive Director of the Northwest Sarcoma Foundation, Jim Paulson, 2016 Dragonslayer,  Patricia Reed-Williams, board president, and Dr. Ernest "Chappie" Conrad, sarcoma surgeon and founder of the foundation.  Chris Eastwood, with Sue & Kristin, part of Jake Eastwood’s care team at Children’s Hospital, led the start of the walk.

At 11:30 the awards program began with a bubble ceremony to remember those lost to sarcoma, after which Dr. Seth Pollack spoke about his latest research.  The following awards were given to top teams:

  • Theo DeVrieze award for largest fundraiser: Team Jake

  • Largest Team Award: Team Cade

  • Spirit Award: Team Malek Strong

The $500 gift certificate was won by Ava, a sarcoma fighter who is walking in her 7th Dragonslayer!

Overall, the mood was  positive.  Teams gathered to mourn, remember, celebrate, and encourage each other.  It was a highly supportive atmosphere and an amazing turnout considering the weather was cold and windy.

On behalf of the staff and board members of the Northwest Sarcoma Foundation, thank you to the participants and supporters of Dragonslayer 2016!
